It was therefore the basis of a special and close relationship between two members of the military aristocracy. In the strictest sense, “feudal” meanings “pertaining to a fief.” A fief in northwestern Europe, beginning in about the eleventh century, was a gift of valuable, income-producing property – usually control over land and peasants – in return for military service.

“Feudalism” has so many different means that precision is easily lost. The Portuguese brought techniques for planting cane and making sugar from Madeira, but they also brought late feudalism and early capitalism from Europe. The early plantation complex in Brazil contained some institutional survivals from the medieval Mediterranean, as well as other institutions created for the new conditions of the New World. Finally, in 1888 Brazil was the last country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery. Brazil was also the place where the characteristic elements of New World tropical slave plantations were first put together. From the 8th century, when the Carolingian dynasty expanded its territory, the feudal system was widely spreading (Gascoigne, Bamber). Post-classical period started with the fall of Rome and opened up new opportunities in the eastern Medieval. In our ethnocentric way, many of us tend to think of the United States as the place where most slaves were landed. Overall, the document pointed out the history of feudalism. Payment would be a large percentage, negotiated by each individual landowner, of the peasants annual crop.Brazil was peculiarly important in the history of the plantation complex. Rather than buy the land, peasants would work it and live on it (again, much like the knights had done). A wealthy landowner would ‘sub-divide’ his land, much like the church had done. They answered only to the church (Monasticism). Rise of Feudalism With the aristocracy, power was land ownership (land = wealth = power). The knights, now wealthy landowners, created this Aristocracy (class of persons holding exceptional rank and privileges), of landowners. Under the control of the church, the warriors (knights) agreed to except the land, with the promise of fighting for the church whenever called upon (this was the payment for the land). The Church (Monasticism), would then grant large amounts of land to noblemen, who were trained warriors (in this time only the rich were warriors, peasants were not).

The church assumed most of the land following the fall of Rome. Rise of Feudalism The military aspect came from the landowner themselves. The point being, each class has it’s own system.Aristocracy (rich landowners, who would invoke the feudal system). After the fall of Rome, European society broke into 3 basic groups:.Government was a very personal idea, and small in scale (basically communities governed themselves). At this time most of Europe was still tribal.Leaders were NOT willing to simply replace Roman rule with another centralized government. In Europe this system arises after the fall of the Roman empire. Arises when central authority cannot, or will not perform its functions (collect taxes, enforce law, etc.) Or, when it cannot prevent the rise of local powers. Rise of Feudalism Feudalism is a decentralized organization.
